Like most "feminists," I have absolutely no problem with penises. In fact, I kinda like 'em. ;)
However. However, however, however. A lot of people have accused me of being misogynist. I don't think I am, because, obviously, I am female and I have no problem with myself, nor do I think I am in any way a lesser being because I am female. Quite the contrary. But I do have a massive beef with "femininity," or at least, society's idea of femininity, including that of many people who call themselves feminist. I think that associating oneself with pretty pink flowers, baby chicks and Barbies is broadcasting weakness and implying stupidity. I think that women do themselves a disservice with all the "girl power" power puff you-say-bitch-like-it's-a-bad-thing nonsense. I think glorifying images of idiocy, bitchyness and fragility do more to harm the cause of feminism than help it.
Women need to combat the bitchy, pink, flowery imagery, not own it. It doesn't do anything but validate the chauvinism, proving that women LIKE being soft, fragile, stupid victims, that's their place and they're proud of it. That yes, I am a (dumb, whiny, wussy) bitch, what are YOU going to do about it?
No. No, no, no, no. That's as bad and as polarizing as men running around crowing about how strong and awesome they are and how they have an inalienable right to fuck things because God gave them a penis to fuck with. It's just as bad. And I wish women would fucking stop it. They need to not be slaves to skinny, they need to focus on being strong and smart, not sweet and nice; well-groomed and clean, not beautiful and porcelain.
If I have feminist Ragehate, it's against other women, not men. Most men are fine, nowadays. It's flowery, crybaby, chauvinist women that I have a big problem with. They are the biggest and most insidious threat to equality we face, nowadays.
I also have a problem with the word, "feminism." It kind of implies the idea that women are better than men. I do not think that, at all. I think people are people, regardless of their sex organs, and that's that. If it wasn't already taken by a different philosophy, I'd use the term "humanist" instead. But although I don't really like the term, "feminism," I do wish people would look it the hell up before assuming they know what it means.
So, yeah...I'm a raging "feminist," but not in the way most people think of them.
So are you.

Date: 2010-05-01 09:22 pm (UTC)To be clear, I do not blame even the women I'm frustrated with for any sexism that might be directed at them. I am not victim-blaming, here. But I don't think their behavior is helpful, I think it is damaging, and I think that opinion is different from victim-blaming.
